Some might argue that I have too many knitting needles, but I never seem to be able to fine one in the right size and length. Some are in projects (works in progress), others have been taken out of project bags where the project has been completed, but I haven’t put them away.
Why haven’t I put them away? Because I just hadn’t come across an organization system that worked for me.
I’ve tried many different kinds. From roll-up fabric pocket organizers to hanging organizers, to various zipper bags and plastic boxes. None of those really fit how I like to store and use the needles.
So I thought, what would be an efficient way to organize that I would actually use? I like binders, and those can be very easily accessed on shelves. Zipper pockets are okay, but I don’t want one for every size. And I need something transparent or translucent. Preferably with a flap so they don’t fall out should the binder fall over.
I found a package of “30 Pack Binder Folders Pockets with Staggered Closures, Letter Size.” They have velcro closures. At first I thought I’d only need about half, with all of the size needles that I ever really use. But throwing every set of needles for a particular size in one folder pocket was still quite bulky. So I split them into two groups. And I made labels for each pocket. Mom gave me a label maker years ago, and it’s come in so handy for a lot of different needs over the years.
I have one binder now for double-pointed needles, as well as lengths from 9″-16″. The other is for every length larger than 16″. And I do believe that it’s perfect! I repurposed a couple of binders I had here at home, moving their original contents to smaller binders, getting rid of some stuff that I thought I would use but never did (tastes change, etc.), so it was quite inexpensive as well. Win, Win!!
