I’ve had some issues with my thumb knuckle for several weeks now. It has been swollen and very painful off and on, along with a reduced ability to grip things like cans and glasses. Last weekend was the worst that I’ve experienced since it started. So, I finally made an appointment to see someone about it. I skipped the GP and went straight to a specialist. I’m glad I did.
They took x-rays which showed a large calcified area just outside my thumb knuckle joint. “Calcific tendinitis” is the term they used. We decided on a steroid injection to see if that will help break it up, and I go back for a follow-up in about a month. If that doesn’t work, then we’ll look at surgery to remove it.
So for now, I’m trying to slow down a little, obviously not putting pressure on that area (because that flares the pain). I’ll try to do things that I can without aggravating it. Fortunately (?) it’s my non-dominant hand, but it’s amazing how much a person does even with the non-dominant one.
Just wanted to give a little update, since I won’t have a lot of progress to share over the next month or so. Oh, and being idle is not one of my strengths, and there is so much I want to do!
