I went back to the knitting and crochet class this past Wednesday night. I’d been attending a different class for the past couple of quarters, but we finished up our recent study, and I’ve been continuing to knit chemo caps, so I wanted to check in with everyone.
One topic of discussion was progress on current projects and upcoming deadlines. Christmas is right around the corner, yikes! We talked about different types of projects that might be good to make, and headbands or ear warmers was a suggestion that everyone seemed to like.
The Velvet Twist Crochet Headband was a free pattern that we found, and it looked easy enough for our beginners in the class. So I came home and found some leftover yarn and tested it. I made mine about 4 inches wide instead of the recommended 5, hoping that there would be enough yarn to crochet the required length, and it just barely made it. Okay, it’s slightly tighter on my head than it should be, but that gives me information for the next one, and for teaching it.
Yep, I tested it so I can teach others how to make it. I don’t know that I make a great teacher, but I do love sharing what I’ve learned, so I accept that role in situations such as these. This was made with a category 4 weight yarn.
I have a bulkier yarn (category 5) that I’m using to make another one, and I plan to test another one that is not quite as bulky if I can find that in my stash. I’ll get lots of practice this way, which will help me teach it to others and hopefully be able to answer any questions the others may have.
I also found a video tutorial by the pattern author, which was excellent for the finishing bits.
