Organizing scrap bins

We had storms with a lot of rain, hail, thunder, and lightning Saturday, which altered plans for that day. With flickering lights and power outages (that each time didn’t last long, but were enough to make me wary about using sewing machines), I decided to work on organizing my scrap bins, similar to how Bonnie Hunter recently organized hers. Granted, my scrap bins are nowhere near as plentiful as hers are. But as each size has gotten fuller, digging through them to find all scraps of a certain color family has become more of a challenge. It also makes the strips and squares more wrinkled and messy.

So on Saturday, I got the 1-1/2″ strips done (pretty full medium-sized storage container), and on Sunday, I finished the 2″ strips (there weren’t as many of those, possibly 1/3 of a medium-sized storage container). I did my strings last weekend, and still have the 2-1/2″ strips to go – there are 2 medium sized containers, so I expect that to take a bit longer. I’ve mixed in jelly rolls with my own cut strips, not surprising there are lots.

The real impetus behind this organization? I’m trying to separate out all the whites/neutrals and turquoise/aquas for my upcoming quilt (Straits of Mackinac), plus I know I’ll need to cut some from my fat quarters in those colors.
