I think Chinese Dragon Gate is one of the lesser-known Chatelaine designs. One of the reasons I liked it was because it was not a mandala design. The second photo is closer to true colors – the fabric is a 28 count navy evenweave.
I finished the body of the upper left bonsai tree, then concentrated on finishing out the stitching on the right that I had already done on the left. After that, I filled in some additional areas on both the left and the right, some plain cross stitch, and some specialty stitches such as dense Rhodes, Algerian eyelets, and rice stitches.
There is a nice mix of DMC, a variety of silks, and several metallic braids, plus a few beads in this design, making it very colorful and dramatic. My plan is to continue stitching it from the top down, so it will be a little while before I see that Chinese dragon take shape.
