As I’ve been making the Sunshine and Shadow Starburst quilt blocks, I’ve been working with some of my woven plaid fabrics, and every time I do, I think of this jacket pattern. So I’ve finally resolved to make it.
I’ve wanted to make a quilted/patchwork jacket for years, but I just haven’t set aside the time and mental space to begin one. I picked up this pattern many years ago, either at a quilt guild sale, or at an estate sale. I can’t remember which.

The pattern calls for using Pellon Thermolam Plus (TP970) instead of batting or a sweatshirt, so I had to purchase that and four buttons. I went with some standard 1-inch neutral-colored round ones.
Now I’ll need to cut out the pattern shapes and piece the background and the foundation paper-pieced trees. I had already made one tree several months ago, and I’m hoping it will be okay. I used a bright white for the background and didn’t cut some of my background pieces quite large enough in the seam areas.

I’m also thinking of using other fabrics in the foundation paper piecing, not just the woven plaids. I’m not sure if I can do this one over, since I’ve already used the paper piece, but I might try to make a copy of it on some newsprint paper and try it again with a muslin or slightly darker background. The white is a bit stark, and I’m not sure what I was thinking there.
