Swatching for a sweater

I’ve had this yarn in my stash since late 2014. I bought it because I wanted to make a sweater with it. And at that time, I had made exactly one sweater – a cardigan from a Craftsy class called “My First Sweater.” It is from an indie dyer from North Carolina who may or may not be dying anymore – I was impressed that the hanks of yarn were 250 grams each.

My intention was to make the Beck sweater by Dani Sunshine. And I did make it in early 2015, but with a different yarn entirely. I don’t remember how it happened exactly, but I was convinced by someone at a local yarn shop to use a different yarn. The fiber content is 65% alpaca, and 35% rayon – no wool – so it’s really lightweight but also quite warm. Don’t get me wrong. It is a pretty sweater, and I wear it often, but it is not what I originally imagined or intended.

Of course, after all of this time, I’ve learned more about working with variegated yarns, and I’m hoping I can use some of that knowledge to help prevent some unsightly pooling that can occasionally happen when using them.

I haven’t decided whether to try the purple yarn as the contrast color. It is more of a sport weight, and may not look right with the closer-to-worsted weight of the main yarn. So I ordered a skein of Malabrigo Rios yarn that I think is somewhere between the two colors shown. If I don’t use it here, I can use it in a hat or fingerless mitts.

Oh yeah, and the pattern calls for a DK weight, which is a little lighter than worsted. So I have a few challenges ahead. But I’m going to go ahead and see what happens. Of course, I need to finish my Stonecrop cardigan first.
