Straits of Mackinac binding

My first step was to choose a binding fabric, and I decided to get some new fabric instead of trying to find enough of an existing fabric (or making scrappy, which might have been nice, but I wasn’t in the right headspace to even consider at the time).

I went shopping with my mom, and we both picked out some pretty fabrics for our projects. I thought this fabric would work nicely, and it has a hint of striping without actually being a stripe. It has light and medium shades of turquoise and splashes of aqua.

Next up, trimming the excess backing and batting from the quilt. This time was easier than most, and I trimmed right up to the edge of the quilt top. There isn’t a whole lot of extra backing fabric this time, even though 108-inch wide fabric was used. This is one of the largest quilts I’ve made. And the quilting is just the perfect match for this design!

Usually I do a 2½ inch width folded bias binding. But I decided to use the same size as I’ve done on recent project bags, as it has worked well – 2¼ inch.

For this quilt, I’m sewing it to the back and folding it over and machine sewing it down on the front. I love how the quilting design really shows up on the backing, which is Moda Ombré Confetti Turquoise.

And, in what seems like record time to me, I was able to finish sewing it to the front this week. Happy dancing!

Luke immediately jumped up to inspect, and he seems to approve of this quilt as well.

“Is it for me?”
