Some different hexies

As I was cutting out a lot of little fabric “recs” pieces for the Straits of Mackinac quilt, I had the tv going in the background. Just some random videos from quilters, stitchers, knitters, and crocheters.

This is where I often get into trouble. You’d think I would learn. But no, not me. I get inspired by others. And then I must try it myself. After all, I have lots of leftovers!

Of course, I’m talking about crocheted hexies. I need to do these like I need another hole in the head, like my dad used to say when I was a kid. But the Hexi Scrappy Blanket Tutorial by Noble Character Crafts was just too enticing.

I didn’t do these exactly as she did, but I used a combination of her video tutorial and the Attic 24 Hexagon How-To instructions to test out how much yarn used, finished size, and difficulty of putting these together.

Crocheted hexie and square side-by-side, approximately 2½ inches each in width

As you can see, they are actually similar in size to the granny squares I’ve been putting into my sock scraps granny square blanket, but they are a bit more dense. I’m guessing that result is a combination of the smaller US C/2.75 mm hook size and the pattern. I might play around with going up a couple of hook sizes to an E/3.5 or an F/3.75 mm to see if that makes the hexies a little less stiff, because I really prefer the drape of my granny square blanket. This density might be okay for a pillow cover, but I don’t think it would make a comfortable blanket.

Just playing around… and looking for ways to use up the bits of yarn that won’t make an entire little granny square, but I can’t bear to just throw away.

I might also make some scrappy socks…

But I don’t need any new projects at the moment! Yeah, right, ha!
