Over the years, I’ve learned that I prefer crochet hooks that are inline rather than tapered. There is a good comparison of the two styles at Jo Creates.
I like the Susan Bates Silvalume line for regular size crochet hooks.
Unfortunately, the Susan Bates brand does not carry inline steel crochet hooks (the smaller sizes used when making thread crochet projects) any longer. Their Steelite line is tapered. The Boye brand of hooks is also tapered. To find an inline hook, you generally have to search for vintage steel crochet hooks.
However, I recently read good things about the Clover Amour line. Enough good things that I thought I’d give them a shot. I have been having trouble with the Boye hook that I used to start my Sweet Dreams crochet doily a few years ago. I was constantly dropping stitches, and I just didn’t seem to be able to make a consistent sized stitch.
After a few rounds, I’ve begun to get the hang of using the new Clover Amour hook. I was a little hesitant about the grip at first, but I actually really like it. I find it pretty comfortable.
And I’ve ordered a vintage Susan Bates Steelite crochet hook from an Etsy seller. I’m looking forward to trying out an actual inline steel crochet hook and seeing if the difference is as noticeable from the Clover Amour as is it from the Amour to the Boye.
