Hex on the Beach

This is one of my English Paper Piecing projects. I bought it as a kit from Keepsake Quilting in 2013. I started it, but because I originally was basting with thread, that part was a little more time-consuming. The fabric hexagons were die-cut at exactly one and a quarter-inch sides, which doesn’t give you very much fabric to wrap around the one-inch side hexagon papers (I usually prefer three-eighths of an inch seam allowance because of the papers).

So I’ve switched to glue basting now. It is faster, and it helps keep the pieces in place better while sewing.

I finished sewing rows 6 and 7, and have started row 8. I’ve also decided to change my strategy for this quilt. I was adding the pieces one hexagon at a time. Now I’m going to try adding them as the pattern suggests – a row at a time. We’ll see how that goes.

Here are before and after photos. I’m pleased with the progress, even though it isn’t a lot. I’ve been working on several other things this month as well.
