Aunt Beulah’s quilt

My great aunt Beulah made a quilt that I claimed many years ago. I love that she hand pieced and hand quilted it. I love everything about it. It’s made with a variety of fabrics, including some polyester double-knits, which just adds to its charm. I can’t imagine hand piecing and hand quilting all that, but she did! Some of the fabric is faded from where I had it folded in a sunny area on a chest. It’s a little lumpy from how I had it folded in my cedar chest too, but it’s still one of my favorite quilts.

The design is one that I have not seen anywhere else, which may also be one of the reasons I adore it. I just received my Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns in the mail today, so I decided to see if it was listed. To my great delight, it was! The pattern is called Arrowhead, and it was in Needlecraft magazine.

When I was showing it off to a friend recently, I decided to mock up the block in my Electric Quilt software. Then I made a couple of blocks, just to see how they would turn out.

I may try a few more with some solids to tame the blocks a little. She made hers without sashing, so I’m going to try to do the same. We’ll see how it goes.

I hope you’re having a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, if and however you celebrate!
