When Bonnie Hunter started her newest mystery, I didn’t think I would begin it so soon, because I didn’t care for her color choices – bright reds, royal blues, and turquoise just aren’t my jam (is that still a saying, or is that passe now?).
However, when I saw my friend Pam’s Part 1 done in 1930’s reproduction fabrics, I immediately fell in love with it and knew that would be my choice as well. I had Friday off work, so I started it then (along with another Bonnie quilt we’ll discuss later), and finished Part 1 that evening.
When I started digging into my box that holds all my 30s fabrics, I realized I don’t have as much as I thought I did. I’ve made a couple of baby quilts with them, and I have a Grandmother’s Flower Garden in progress using them as well. So, I’m planning to use more than three colors, hoping that I won’t need to buy more at the moment. It’s not that I don’t want to buy more – I love 30s reproduction prints. I’m just trying to see if I can do it with what I have on hand. It means a little more planning as I go, so I only got to finishing Part 2a yesterday (there are 3 rounds to Part 2).
In part 2b, I plan to introduce a new color – some turquoise, so it shouldn’t be a jarring departure – plus, there will still be some pinks in rounds 2b and 2c. I was surprised by how long it took me to get through this round. I have already sewn some pieces for the next round, but still have more to go.
